Educating Boarders in Urban Farming, BINUS Square Held Farming Workshop Through Microgreens Workshop – Let’s Grow Tiny Greens

Microgreens Workshop: let’s grow tiny greens

Jakarta, 2026 – Microgreen 101: A Practical Guide to Harvesting Nutrition at Home is an educational urban farming workshop organized by the Event Collaborative Group 3. This event was designed to introduce participants to the concept of microgreens from what they are and how they differ from sprouts and mature vegetables, to why they are considered a superfood packed with nutrients. The workshop also guided participants through the entire growing process, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of prior gardening experience.

More than just a lecture, this workshop was built around a hands-on experience. Participants were encouraged to get creative, ask questions, and walk away not only with knowledge but with their very own pot of microgreens. Through this event, we hope to inspire a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle one small pot at a time.

Registration

(Participant Registration Desk)

Prior to the event, participants were directed to the registration desk for check-in from 1:00 PM until 1.30 PM. This process confirmed the attendance of those who had previously completed the registration form. Upon checking in, each participant received snacks and also will be getting the equipments later.

Opening by the MC

(Opening Session — MC introducing the concept of Microgreens to participants)

The event was opened warmly by the MC, who then launched into the first segment: a brief yet comprehensive introduction to microgreens. Participants learned about the definition of microgreens, how they compare to sprouts and fully grown vegetables in terms of growth stage and nutritional density, and why they are considered one of the most nutrient-rich foods available. The presentation was accompanied by vibrant, informative slides that immediately captured the audience’s attention and set an enthusiastic tone for the rest of the workshop.

Ice Breaking: Morning, Noon, Evening, Night

(Ice Breaking Session — participants following the clapping instructions)

To warm up the crowd and get everyone energized, the MC led a fun ice-breaking game themed around times of the day. The rules were simple: clap once for “morning,” twice for “noon,” three times for “evening,” and not at all for “night.” The catch was that the MC would try to trick participants by speeding up or mixing up the order unexpectedly. The activity successfully broke the ice and filled the room with laughter, creating a lively and comfortable atmosphere for the rest of the event.

Game 1 — Vegetable Matching

(Participants playing the vegetable card matching game)

The first game was Vegetable Matching, where participants were tasked with pairing illustrated cards featuring various plants and microgreens with their correct matches. Each card selected had to be paired based on visual similarity or plant category. This game was designed to expand participants’ knowledge of the different types of vegetables commonly grown as microgreens, while also testing their attention to detail and memory in a fun, competitive setting.

Game 2 — Guess the Vegetable

(Guess the Vegetable game based on descriptive narration)

In the second game, participants were challenged to identify a type of vegetable based solely on a descriptive narration read aloud by the MC or facilitator. Clues included the plant’s texture, flavor profile, aroma, and common culinary uses. Participants competed to be the first to call out the correct answer. This game deepened participants’ understanding of the unique characteristics of various microgreen species and made learning about plants genuinely exciting.

Collecting Tools & Materials

(Participants collecting their pots, brushes, paint, and seeds)

After the game sessions wrapped up, participants were guided to collect their planting materials prepared by the organizing team. Each person received one pot, a saucer, a selection of seeds, growing medium, as well as brushes and paint to decorate their pots. The team ensured all supplies were neatly organized and readily available so participants could move seamlessly into the next activity.

Pot Decoration and Microgreen Planting Session

(Participants decorating their pots with paint and personal creativity)

One of the most memorable highlights of the workshop was the pot decoration session. Participants were given complete creative freedom to paint and personalize their pots however they wished — whether with patterns, characters, words, or abstract designs. The session created a wonderfully relaxed and joyful atmosphere, with participants exchanging ideas, laughing together, and admiring each other’s work. By the end of the session, every pot had its own personality, reflecting the unique creativity of the person who made it.

With their pots freshly decorated and dried, participants moved on to the centerpiece of the workshop: planting their very own microgreens. Under the guidance of the facilitator, each step was carefully explained and demonstrated — from filling the pot with growing medium and evenly spreading the seeds across the surface, to giving the soil its first gentle watering with a sprayer. Participants were also reminded of the simple daily care routine: water every morning or evening, keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, and place the pot in a spot with adequate sunlight. In just 7 to 14 days, their microgreens would be ready to harvest.

Closing

The workshop concluded with an enthusiastic group photo session. Every participant proudly held up the pot they had decorated and planted themselves a tangible reminder of everything they had learned and experienced that day. Despite being a single-day event, this workshop managed to plant something far more lasting: a genuine curiosity for urban farming and a meaningful step toward greener, healthier living.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to all participants, the organizing team, and BINUS Square for their support in making this event a success. We hope the microgreens planted today will not only grow tall, but also grow into a lasting habit of sustainable and mindful living.

Happy growing, and see you at the next event!

Warm regards,
